Bail Refused in Bank Fraud Case

The CBI Special Court in Ahmedabad rejected the bail application of a former Senior Vice President of a private sector bank on June 4, finding that his continued custody was necessary given the risk of evidence tampering, witness influence, and flight risk.

The Accusation

The accused, who headed the corporate lending division of the bank’s Ahmedabad branch, is alleged to have approved a series of term loans and working capital facilities totalling approximately ₹180 crore to a cluster of shell companies with no real business operations. The loans, which were disbursed over an 18-month period between 2021 and 2022, were nominally backed by inflated real estate collateral — properties whose valuations the CBI contends were fraudulently inflated by a network of empanelled valuers who operated in collusion with the accused.

The Court’s Reasoning for Refusal

The Special Court, in its order, noted three specific grounds for refusing bail: first, that the accused had access to financial resources and connections that could facilitate flight; second, that several witnesses in the case were former subordinates of the accused who might be susceptible to influence; and third, that the investigation was at a critical stage involving the examination of bank records that the accused, if at liberty, might be in a position to tamper with through contacts within the bank’s administrative systems.

Investigation Status

The CBI is expected to file its chargesheet before the Special Court within the next 60 days. The accused has been in judicial custody since his arrest in March 2026 and is expected to approach the Gujarat High Court with a fresh bail application.
